We are running out of shopping days. I’ve checked off many items on my list. Soon, Opa and Iza (that’s my husband’s, and my grandparents’ names) will be doing one of our favorite annual activities. We devote the entire day, from early till late usually, shopping exclusively for the grandchildren. It is so much fun shopping at the toy stores. We buy a “practical” item or two, like coats or mittens – just as a token- to show the parents we aren’t “spoiling” the children. But, the real fun is seeing them enjoying the gifts. Amazingly, sometimes, a gift that we think is going to be the best gift under the tree turns out to be the one that is ignored. But, I have found over the years that gifts that can be used over and over in new, creative ways usually rank high. That’s why wooden blocks have stood the test of time. You can build tower after tower and it never seems to lose it’s appeal.
Other gifts that seem to really give a good return are items like board games that can be played over and over through years. No electronics, or upgrades needed. But the best idea I want to share with you this year is the gift of art and craft supplies.
If you know someone who is a quilter, or builds tiny ships and places them in bottles, or someone who crochets, or builds bird houses – support their hobbies! They will love new tools or materials – or books about their craft.
If there is anyone else on this earth who you are shopping for – get them art supplies! I can not think of ANYONE (bank presidents, doctors, construction workers, musicians, your postman, male, female, young or old) who would not benefit from an art kit. It’s like a gift basket, full of goodies, interesting colors, and tools that can be used over and over again. Who knows, you might start someone on an art journey that continues for the rest of his or her life.
As adults, often, we think that we don’t know how to use paints, brushes, pastels, charcoal. But, you do. When you were given art supplies in elementary school, you didn’t hesitate for a second to pick up a brush and slosh it into some paint and create your masterpiece. You just jumped in and enjoyed the experience.
You could consider art kits for everyone on your list (and maybe throw in a basic “how to draw” book for inspiration). Think of how much fun it would be for the whole family at grandmas to get their art kits out after dinner and start creating, together. Art gatherings could become a new tradition in 2018 for your family. Making art with friends (like the paint and wine studios people go to) can be done at home. The art kits could also be used as a date night activity for couples. Or consider creating a family night where everyone leaves their smart phones in another room, and you play board games or create together.
Remember how neat it is to open a brand new box of crayons? An art kit multiplies that feeling. You could easily purchase several online and have them delivered right to your door. They would be easy to wrap, stack and haul if you have to. And, I’m sure they would bring childlike fun to the old folks, relaxation to the moms and dads who are stressed through the holiday season, and of course, hours of occupation for the completely uninhibited children. The art supplies might even be used on a long car ride home from Grandmas.
To everyone reading this blog. Merry Christmas. Think Creativity. Think relaxation and family and friends and ART! Blessings to you all.
